2011: Cooking up Self-Sufficiency
When Travis Bagley was growing up, his home was the emergency stop for children whose homes – whether their own homes or their most recent foster homes – were no longer safe places for them to be. During his college years, Travis carried on his family’s passion to help foster youth, especially those who are coming of age and are about to be “emancipated,” from care, ready or not.
In 2011 Travis was part of the SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) club at Feather River College. The club learned and applies entrepreneurial skills to be of service in their community. One of their projects was developing one-on-one mentoring relationships with foster youth, and inviting them on campus for monthly life skills workshops. The SIFE club developed a wonderful partnership with the school’s Culinary Arts program and offered a very successful “Cooking on a Budget” workshop, where students learned to cook multiple nutritious meals from just a few ingredients.
Bread for the Journey Feather River was happy to provide a $350 grant to purchase groceries for the class with a new field trip addition, “Grocery Shopping on a Budget.” We were proud to support a program that empowers young people to help vulnerable youth, strengthening the life skills and capacity of all involved.
