How Bread for the Journey began
Today, we're our own nonprofit, but Bread for the Journey Feather River started in 2010 as part of a larger movement of grassroots philanthropy across the country.
Bread for the Journey started 30 years ago in Santa Fe, New Mexico around a kitchen table (the symbol in our logo), by author and therapist Wayne Muller and a few friends, a small group of “ordinary” people like us. They were not people of great wealth but they each felt they had something to give. Over a spaghetti dinner, they explored how they could be more generous and support positive change in their community.
From that dinner, a simple, effective model of grassroots philanthropy evolved, supporting local people to start projects that make their communities more whole, just, and beautiful. It grew into a national nonprofit supporting 20+ volunteer chapters around the country, including our chapter in the Feather River region. After many years of building the capacity of the local chapters with the training and tools they needed to stand on their own, the national organization disbanded. Several chapters decided to carry on in keeping with the unique strengths and good works emerging in their own communities.
In 2017, Bread for the Journey Feather River formed as its own local, independent non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status.
At its heart, our work at Bread for the Journey is about inviting people to participate as an agent of change to make their local community more vital, healthy, beautiful, and just.
Together, we can make a big difference! Bread for the Journey’s simple, mindful “grassroots philanthropy” generates a sense of empowerment and hope that we are strong, wise, and capable enough to make our community a better place for everyone.
We invite you to roll up your sleeves and get involved. Your gifts are needed, whether they are time, money, skills, relationships, or a creative idea to improve our community.
