Save Our Town Hall Theater
The community came together in full force to rescue our century old movie theater from being shut down permanently. The theatre, which hosts movies and live performances, was faced with a dire situation. Film makers are switching over to producing films only in digital format. To keep the theatre (and the cultural heart of Quincy) open, Plumas Arts had to raise $70,000 to buy a new digital projector system. “I wasn’t sure the public really cared about having a movie theater or not. It’s pretty clear now!” said Roxanne Valladao, Plumas Arts Director. (Watch the video here).
The “Save our Theater” fundraising campaign came together seemingly overnight. An open mic night at the theater, the brain-child of Bread for the Journey board member Tiffiney Lozano, kicked it all off and raised $10,000 in just one night! Bread for the Journey Feather River donated $500 and offered to match an additional $1,000 in donations that night. The community outpour of support was nothing less than inspirational, especially within the younger generation. Within a few months, the movie theater had all the funds needed to purchase the projector as well as making a few well needed improvements to other equipment and to the building.
This was very much an example of a small community of folks coming together to make something wonderful happen!
